The phrase "A man's home is his castle" applies quite literally to the tech moguls of today. With technology representing perhaps the most lucrative industrial sector out there, it should come as no surprise that tech executives do pretty well as far as money in the bank is concerned. What's likely more surprising is just how opulent some of these leaders' houses are. Recently, Business Insider put together a list of some of the most lavish homes in tech. Here are a few of the more notable selections:
- Jon Oringer: As founder of popular digital imagery licensing service Shutterstock, Oringer now lives in a setting that is suitably picturesque. But instead of retreating to some groved enclave in a place beyond the bounds of Google Maps, Oringer has set up housekeeping smack dab in the middle of the city he grew up in: The Big Apple. As a resident in a West Village apartment complex, Oringer presumably enjoys the hustle and bustle of big city life like every other New Yorker. One thing that sets him apart, however, is the undeniable quality of his residence. Though his apartment may only have two bedrooms, these rooms were designed by noted architect Richard Meier, and Oringer's apartment has a great view of the Hudson.
- Jack Dorsey: When you're co-founder of Twitter, it's safe to say that the world is yours when it comes to selecting the home of your dreams. But even with that in mind, Jack Dorsey certainly dreamed big. The young techie shelled out around $10 million to purchase a 1960's-era mansion on the slopes of the San Francisco Bay. Within the house, the Twitter titan takes his dinner plates out of custom-made Brazilian cabinets.
- Sergey Brin: Another executive who didn't want to sequester himself just because he made his first billion, Google's Sergey Brin chooses to live in New York City's chic Greenwich Village neighborhood. Situated in Lower Manhattan, "The Village," as it's called, has long been one of the most elite neighborhoods in the city, and Brin's property is about as good as it gets. With heated limestone floors, four bedrooms and one crazy-long balcony, it's no wonder that the 3,500-square-foot apartment set the Google exec's eyes a-goggle. Not only was Brin aesthetically motivated in his choice of penthouse, but he was also pragmatic, as real estate specialist Kyle Egan points out.
"The scarcity of penthouse condos in the West Village coupled with a strong demand will continue to drive the value of this property," he said.
- Mark Cuban: Ever heard the phrase "Go big or go home"? Well Mark Cuban has – in fact not only has he heard it, but he lives it too. As owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Cuban oversees a team whose average player towers over the mere mortals among us. And Cuban has a similarly towering approach to his private life, spending his days in a 24,000-square-foot Dallas mansion with 13 bathrooms and 10 bedrooms. His Dallas abode enables him easy access to the games of the team he owns, so it's safe to say that everything works out for this strong-jawed, thick-haired, able-bodied 6'3'' walking testament to the American Dream.
- The Winklevii: If you saw "The Social Network" and are tempted to feel bad for Tyler and Cameron – those blue-blooded lax bros who laid claim to Facebook – we beg you not to. After all, the two men are living a picture-perfect life in a sprawling Hollywood Hills mansion replete with pool, luxurious accoutrements and an unbeatable view of the city of angels. So yeah, they're doing just fine.
