There's been a lot of back-and-forth and mixed messages surrounding the whole Sony hack, and the most recent bit of news from the major company isn't likely to make things any less confusing.
In what is arguably the biggest cybersecurity story of this year, cybercriminals attacked Sony Pictures and succeeded in grinding the planned release of "The Interview" to a halt with threats of violence. The Seth Rogen vehicle was meant to be a satirical look at North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un, but the country saw the film as a major threat and promised retaliation.
At this point, whether or not the cyberattack can be traced to North Korea is still up for debate, but there's no arguing about the impact of the attack, which led to Sony halting the Christmas release of the movie.
"The Interview" Is Coming Out – But When?
Now Sony is saying that the movie isn't canceled completely – only delayed. According to USA Today, a lawyer for the studio said the production company is still planning to release the film – it's just not clear when or how.
"Sony has been fighting to get this picture distributed," said the lawyer, David Boies. "It will be distributed. How it's going to be distributed I don't think anyone knows quite yet."
Boies' statement seems to contradict what the studio said last week, which is that it doesn't have release plans for the movie. Pretty much any way you look at it, this whole thing is a mess for the studio, and the next few weeks and months will see how Sony copes with the fallout – and if it's able to restore its reputation as a powerhouse studio. Until then, the Seth Rogen movie will have to wait for a later date.
