But we don't pinky promise. Actually, who are we kidding – we can't promise at all. Because frankly, news about Apple's newest piece of gadgetry is only getting more interesting by the day, even though the release of the phone is, by now, old news (at least by Internet News standards).
First, we reported about the debut of the iPhone. Then, we talked about the borderline frightening lengths patrons went to in order to ensure they could get their hands on the product. Now, there's a new piece of information that perhaps trumps the other two in terms of sheer confounding-ness: The iPhone bends. And that doesn't seem to be a good thing.
Uhhhh … should it be doing this?
Putting your hands around a brand new iPhone 6 Plus and straining to bend it may seem sacrilege to some people, but the folks over at SquareSpace and Unbox Therapy did it in the name of science. Or perhaps in the name of undermining Apple's cool factor. But whatever the motive was, the results weren't pretty.
Here's the thing: an iPhone shouldn't bend. Yet that's exactly what the larger version of the sixth iteration does. As the "Bend Test" reveals, it doesn't take much downward force at all to bend the iPhone into something rather resembling a crescent moon. Well OK, but maybe that's just a new and cool feature of the device, right? I mean, I like my technology to have a bit of elasticity as much as the next person, but now I think it's time to bend it back into place …
No can do. As it turns out, once the iPhone 6 Plus is bent, there's no unbending it. The guy in the Unbox Therapy video discovered that the hard way when he attempted to restore the device to its original straight appearance and ended up with this result. So yeah, the bending thing is decidedly not a desirable and intentional feature of the product. Yet as it turns out, it's an exceedingly widespread one. Indeed, the Internet has been swarming with nervous iPhone 6 Plus users asking if the phone bending in their pocket is normal, and discovering, much to their horror, that it isn't.
"I received my iPhone 6 Plus 64GB spacegray at about 3 p.m. on Friday and set it up, but haven't worn it out that day, so it wasn't in my pocket," one such customer said in an Apple forum. "Yesterday, I left at 10 a.m. with the iPhone in my left FRONT pocket of my suit pants. I drove 4 hours to a wedding, which also involved a lot of sitting during dinner etc but also 2-3 hours of dancing. I left at 2 a.m. and went to bed, driving home 4 hours back."
That was his first day with his iPhone. And you know how it ended? With a bent device. Huh. Doesn't seem to bode well for the iPhone 6 Plus's longevity.
And bending isn't the only problem
As if the undesirable flexibility of the new iPhone wasn't enough, Apple is also dealing with a botched attempt to release the first update for iOS 8. According to The New York Times, the first software update launched for the new OS caused a litany of problems for users including preventing them from using their devices.
What all of this suggests is that perhaps it's best to wait a bit instead of wait in a multi-day line. If you're among the first people to get an iPhone, you'll also be the first to discover its weaknesses. Those kinks can and will be worked out in time, which is why waiting a bit to get your 6 is probably the best way to go.
