The 7 Best Uses for Wearable Cameras (Part 2)

In the first part of this series, we looked at how wearable cameras are changing aerial photography, concerts and sports as we know them. But, these are far from the only applications for this kind of technology. In the second and final installment of this series, we’ll be exploring four other great use cases for wearable cameras.

4) Animal tracking
Have you ever wondered what animals see and do in an average day? Pet owners in particular have long guessed what goes on in the mind of their favorite feline or pooch – somehow we think this commercial does not do Fido justice though – and now wearable cameras are providing them with their elusive answer. In a manner perhaps fitting for the Internet, this technology is finding its way onto cats. Now wearable cameras can solve the eternal riddle of what cats actually see and do when you’re not around. The tech can also solve another mystery: What does it look like to strap a cat to a skateboard?

“Wearable cameras can be immensely useful to conservationists.”

All kidding aside, this technology can be immensely useful to conservationists working with endangered species across the globe. By placing a small camera on a lion or another at-risk animal, researchers can better understand its movement, habitat and lifestyle. Armed with this critical data, enacting efforts to more effectively protect Earth’s creatures and their homes becomes a whole lot easier.

5) Law enforcement
This is by far the most controversial application of this technology, but it is nevertheless a critical use case for wearable cameras. More often than not its use is seen as a way to keep tabs on police officers and others public sector employees, to make sure they are doing their jobs. But it can also be a great boon for them.

For example, a police officer can use a camera equipped with facial recognition technology to more quickly identify an out-of-state fugitive. Or, customs officials can utilize wearable cameras to more efficiently inspect incoming cargo. Whether to ensure public servants are acting as they should or to help them do their jobs more effectively, this technology looks to be an even more critical part of this space in the coming months and years.

6) Cooler cooking shows
We’re not afraid to admit we like cooking shows and that Julia Child is just indisputably awesome. But, that doesn’t mean that the classic filming style used in countless Food Network shows couldn’t use an upgrade. Enter the wearable camera. With this tech, even watching someone make a strawberry pie becomes an extreme and immersive experience. Plus, it can give foodies everywhere a bird’s-eye view of what actually happens in professional kitchens.

Cooking shows may never be same now that chefs have wearable cameras.

7) Underwater awesomeness
Have you ever wanted to know what it was like to dive for ruins, help orcas or play with sea lions? Wearable cameras give you the opportunity to find out, all from the comfort of your couch at home. Many cameras are waterproof, which means that capturing unique underwater footage becomes easier than ever before. Jacques Cousteau, eat your heart out!

Yes, we know this only scratches the surface as far as what these cameras are capable of capturing. As more creative types latch onto this technology, we’re excited the see what else wearable cameras will be able to illuminate for us all.
